The project, called Assembler, was developed by researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Naples in Italy. According to the developers, it could simplify the fight against disinformation. The experimental platform consists of seven "detectors" powered by self-learning neural networks. Five of the detectors identify photo merging or duplicated objects. The other two are designed to identify deepfakes.

"These detectors won't solve the problem entirely, but they are an important tool to combat disinformation," said Luisa Verdoliva, a professor at the University of Naples.

According to Santiago Andrigo, Product Manager at Jigsaw, Assembler will be most valuable to journalists at major news agencies, as it facilitates the verification of controversial images. The free tool is reportedly already being tested by some public organizations and media outlets; the service will not be available to the general public.
