US senator seeks ban on intelligence-sharing with countries using Huawei equipment

US Senator Tom Cotton has introduced a bill to increase pressure on allied states that have not yet made a final decision on the use of telecommunications equipment from the Chinese company Huawei in building fifth generation (5G) communication networks.

US senator seeks ban on intelligence-sharing with countries using Huawei equipment

The bill, if passed, would impose a ban preventing the United States from sharing intelligence with countries that allowed Huawei to build 5G networks. Over the past few months, the US has waged a global campaign against Huawei, accusing the Chinese telecommunications giant of spying for the Chinese government. In the middle of last year, Huawei was on the so-called black list of companies that are prohibited from doing business with American enterprises. In turn, Huawei has repeatedly denied all allegations, stating that the company's activities are not controlled by the Chinese government.

It is worth noting that the bill was made public days before the UK government is due to issue a final verdict on the use of Huawei 5G equipment domestically. Some other countries in the European region also have not yet made a final decision on this issue.

Recall that Senator Cotton is a longtime critic of Huawei. It was he who authored one of the provisions in the law on defense, adopted last month. In accordance with the changes, US intelligence agencies must consider the use of telecommunications and cybersecurity infrastructure "provided by adversaries of the United States, in particular China and Russia," when concluding agreements on the exchange of intelligence data with foreign countries.
