Apple has acquired British startup Spectral Edge, which specializes in enhancing the quality of photos and videos taken on a smartphone. The transaction amount is not disclosed.
The firm was founded by a group of researchers from the University of East Anglia in 2014. It uses machine learning technology to combine the image taken when photographing through conventional lenses and infrared, thus resulting in images with more saturated colors. The company has reportedly raised more than $5 million in investment.
Currently, manufacturers are showing great attention to improving the cameras in their smartphones. Therefore, Apple's new step is considered a strategically calculated decision. Experts suggest that the main goal is not to borrow technology, but to get talented employees.
