Chrome 82 will no longer support FTP

One of the upcoming updates of the Chrome browser will completely lose support for the FTP protocol. This is stated in a special document from Google, addressed to this topic. However, the "innovations" will come into force only after a year or even later.

Chrome 82 will no longer support FTP

Correct support for the FTP protocol in the Chrome browser has always been a sore subject for Google developers. One of the reasons for the abandonment of FTP is the lack of support for a secure connection over this protocol in Chromium. Back in 2015, developers from Google opened a topic in the official Chromium bug tracker asking them to drop support for FTP. And only recently this β€œbug” was noticed in order to completely remove FTP components from the browser. In addition, the company notes that only 0,1% of Chrome users have ever opened pages with file directories.

Discontinuation of File Transfer Protocol (FTP) support quite expected, since it is already difficult to use this protocol in Chrome - by default, it is recognized by the browser as insecure and opens only upon user confirmation. Approximately the same opinion about this data transfer protocol is shared by Mozilla, which in version Firefox 60 added the function of manually disabling FTP. Further, in update number 61, the download of resources that are stored on FTP was blocked.

A complete deprecation of the protocol is planned to begin in Chrome 80, which will be released in the first quarter of 2020, and the subsequent 82nd update will completely remove components and code related to FTP.
