Debian is on track to stop shipping 32-bit builds for x86 systems

At the Debian developer meeting in Cambridge, the issue of phasing out support for the 32-bit x86 (i386) architecture was discussed. The plans include the cessation of the formation of official installation assemblies and kernel packages for 32-bit x86 systems, but the preservation of the presence of a package repository and the ability to deploy 32-bit environments in isolated containers. It is also planned to continue delivering a multi-arch repository and tooling to ensure that 32-bit applications can be built and run in a 64-bit x86_64 environment. If the plan is approved, it could be implemented in the Debian 13 β€œTrixie” branch, scheduled for 2025.
