Raspberry Pi 4 certified with OpenGL ES 3.1 support and new Vulkan driver under development

Raspberry Pi Project Developers announced the about the start of work on a new free video driver for the VideoCore VI graphics accelerator used in Broadcom chips. The new driver is based on the Vulkan graphics API and is primarily aimed at use with Raspberry Pi 4 boards and models that will be released in the future (the capabilities of the VideoCore IV GPU that came with Raspberry Pi 3 are not enough to fully implement Vulkan).

The development of a new driver, in collaboration with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, is led by the company Igalia. So far, only the initial prototype of the driver has been prepared, suitable for performing simple demonstrations. The first beta release, which can be used to run some real applications, is planned to be published in the second half of 2020.
