FAS initiated a case against Apple based on a statement from Kaspersky Lab

Russia's Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) has initiated a case against Apple in connection with the company's actions in distributing applications for the iOS mobile operating system.

The antitrust investigation was launched at the request of Kaspersky Lab. Back in March, the Russian antivirus software developer addressed to the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) with a complaint against the Apple empire. The reason was that Apple refused to publish the latest version of the Kaspersky Safe Kids app for iOS in the App Store, citing that it did not meet one of the store's requirements.

It was reported that the use of configuration profiles in the Kaspersky Lab product in question violated App Store policy. Therefore, Apple required their removal so that the app could pass review and be published in the store.

Apple's actions resulted in the latest version of Kaspersky Safe Kids losing a significant portion of its functionality. "At the same time, Apple introduced its own Screen Time app in iOS 12, which, in terms of functionality, is similar to parental control apps," the FAS said in its documents.

Therefore, the antitrust authority concluded that Apple's actions in imposing vague requirements on developer software and rejecting versions of software previously distributed in the App Store constituted an abuse of Apple's dominant position in the iOS app distribution market.

The Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia has scheduled the case hearing for September 13, 2019. Apple has not yet responded.
