Photo of the day: the birth of stars

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) presented an image of the stellar "nursery" - a region of the Universe with the active formation of new stars.

The image captures a cluster of galaxies in the constellation Phoenix, approximately 5,8 billion light-years from Earth. Clusters of galaxies are some of the largest structures in the universe. They can contain hundreds and thousands of gravitationally bound galaxies, and the mass of such objects reaches 1015 solar masses.

The captured cluster is notable for the fact that in its β€œheart” new stars are born with great speed. And this process, according to scientists, contributes to the central black hole.

Several scientific instruments were used to collect data on galaxy clusters. These are the Chandra X-ray Observatory, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and the Karl Jansky Very Large Array.

Full resolution image of the cluster can be downloaded hence
