The National Science Foundation (NSF) has unveiled the most detailed photographs of the Sun's surface taken to date.

The shooting was carried out using the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST). This device, located in Hawaii, is equipped with a 4-meter mirror. To date, DKIST is the largest telescope designed to study our star.

The device is capable of β€œexamining” formations on the surface of the Sun ranging in size from 30 km in diameter. The presented image clearly shows the cellular structure: the size of each zone is comparable to the area of the American state of Texas.

The bright areas in the cells are the zones in which plasma escapes to the surface of the Sun, and the dark edges are where it sinks back. This process is called convection.

It is expected that the Daniel Inouye Solar Telescope will allow us to collect qualitatively new data about our star and study solar-terrestrial connections, or so-called space weather, in more detail. As is known, activity on the Sun affects the magnetosphere, ionosphere and atmosphere of the Earth.
