The European Southern Observatory (ESO, European Southern Observatory) has published a magnificent picture of the vastness of our galaxy.
In this image, the planets Venus and Jupiter flaunt low above the horizon. In addition, the Milky Way shines in the sky.
The ESO La Silla Observatory can be seen in the foreground of the photo. It is located on the edge of the Atacama high mountain desert, 600 km north of Santiago de Chile at an altitude of 2400 meters.
Like other observatories in this geographical area, La Silla is remote from sources of light pollution and has possibly the darkest night sky on the entire globe. And this makes it possible to take unique pictures of space.
In the published photo, the Milky Way is a star ribbon that stretches along the entire horizon. Venus is the brightest object on the left side of the frame, while Jupiter is a fainter glowing dot at the bottom and slightly to the right.
In addition, La Silla became an ESO base in the 1960s. Here, ESO has two XNUMX-meter-class telescopes, some of the most productive in the world.
