Google without big announcements released An app that can convert speech to text offline, meaning without an internet connection. The app is called Google AI Edge Eloquent and is currently only available for Apple iOS; the developer has promised a version for Android with deep integration into the system.
After installing the app, the user can install a local AI model based on the open-source Gemma and dictate text to be recorded by the smartphone. The text appears in real time as you dictate, and when you pause, the app removes filler words and suggests improvements. Features include creating a summary of key points, converting to a formal style, and "Short" and "Long" options. Cloud mode can be disabled, allowing only local data processing; the cloud handles text cleanup. Google AI Edge Eloquent supports importing specific keywords, proper names, and jargon from Gmail conversations; you can also add your own words manually.
The app stores the history of speech transcription sessions and allows searching across all sessions. It displays the words the user dictated in the last session, the speech rate, and the total number of words spoken. Google AI Edge Eloquent is currently only available for Apple iOS, but the company promises to release it for other devices as well. Android, and with integration into the system - it can be selected as a standard keyboard.
