Hackers stole $49 million from Upbit cryptocurrency exchange

It looks like the spate of thefts and fraud related to digital currencies is not going to stop anytime soon. This time, the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit was attacked by hackers. It became known that the attackers managed to transfer 342 Ethereum from the exchange’s “hot” wallet, the total value of which is about $000 million.

After this incident, the exchange temporarily suspended operations, prohibiting cryptocurrency deposits and withdrawals. The remaining untouched assets were promptly transferred to the exchange’s “cold” wallets, which were not accessible to attack. It was announced that the exchange will reimburse users for losses from its own assets, but deposits and withdrawals will remain blocked for two weeks.

There is a wide range of parties that could potentially be involved in this incident. Independent or government hackers may be involved in cryptocurrency theft. In addition, it cannot be ruled out that this is not a theft, but a case of fraud organized by a cryptocurrency exchange. According to some experts, what is quite suspicious about this story is that the theft was carried out at a time when the exchange was carrying out a planned transfer of assets.

This case was another incident in the field of digital currencies, of which there are more and more. Not long ago, CipherTrace specialists conducted a study based on which it was counted, that the total losses in the cryptocurrency market for the first three quarters of 2019 are about $4,4 billion. This suggests that services that allow various transactions with digital currencies need to do more to protect wallets from attacks by hackers.
