Initiative to Port MATE Applications to Wayland

Mir display server and MATE desktop developers united efforts to port MATE applications to run in Wayland-based environments. A demo snap package has already been prepared mate wayland with the Wayland-based MATE environment, but there is still a lot of work to be done to get it ready for everyday use, mostly porting end applications to Wayland.

The problem is that many MATE applications use bindings to X11-specific functionality and need to be converted to use fully portable GTK3 code. Given the large number of applications and a significant code base, the work requires tangible resources. To attract interested enthusiasts to porting, Mir developers have prepared instructions, which tells how to set up the Wayland-based MATE working environment and what points in the code you should pay attention to. The manual also offers generic solutions for replacing certain bindings to X11.
