Chinese scientist He Jiankui, who created the world's first genetically modified children, was sentenced in China to three years in prison.
He Jiankui announced in November 2018 the birth of twin girls whose genes were modified using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology. This sparked a backlash both in China and around the world over the ethics of his research and work.
On Monday, the Nanshan District People's Court of Shenzhen held a hearing at which Jiankui was found guilty of conducting illegal practices and fined (in addition to prison sentence) 3 million yuan ($430), the state news agency Xinhua reported. Two of his colleagues, who also took part in illegal experiments that led to the birth of three genetically modified children, were also punished with prison terms and fines.
