New Article: Huawei MateBook D 15 (MRC-W10) Review: An Inexpensive Laptop for Study and Work

You could get acquainted with the first version of MateBook D back in 2017 - we dedicated this model separate material. Then Alexander Babulin called it very succinctly - a classic desktop laptop. And you can’t argue with a colleague: in front of you is a strictly, but nice-looking “tag”. In this article, we will take a close look at the 2019 version, which has just gone on sale in Russia.

The MRC-W10 version came to us for testing. This laptop, in addition to the Core i5-8250U, uses 8 GB of DDR4-2400 RAM and a 256 GB SATA SSD. There is no discrete graphics in it. Such a model costs 51 rubles. The wireless network in the device is implemented using the Intel 990 controller, which supports IEEE 8265b / g / n / ac standards with a frequency of 802.11 and 2,4 GHz and a maximum bandwidth of up to 5 Mbps and Bluetooth 867.

The Huawei MateBook D comes with a very compact and very convenient 65W power supply. It weighs only 200 grams, and therefore does not take up much space in the bag and does not weigh it down much.

#Appearance

I really like the new Huawei outwardly. Strict, stylish design - and, as they say, nothing more. The company called the color of the dark version "space gray", but on sale you will also find the "mystical silver" version of the MateBook D. Choose the one you like best. The MateBook D case itself is entirely made of aluminum alloy - it's amazing to see metal in a laptop costing just over 50 thousand rubles. In my opinion, it’s very hard to find fault with the build quality – the device is tailored well, there’s nothing to add here.

You cannot open the laptop lid with one hand - too tight hinges are used in the design of the device. But they clearly fix the lid in the open state. As much as possible, it opens at about 130 degrees.

The MateBook D weighs less than two kilograms, and this option looks better than, say, some budget gaming laptop if you always need a “fifteen” at hand. For example, mass ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY is 2,2 kg - and this is without taking into account the half-kilogram power supply. At the same time, the thickness of the Meitbook is only 17 mm. In general, you have a good and compact hiking option - that's why, in fact, I classified it as “laptops for study”.

The MateBook D screen occupies 83% of the entire lid area. And no wonder: the side frames are quite thin - 6 mm. The top and bottom frames are noticeably larger - oh well.

All the main interfaces of the laptop are located on the sides. On the left we see a power port, an HDMI output, two USB 3.1 Gen1 A-types and a 3,5mm headphone jack. On the right there is only a USB 2.0 connector, also A-type. Unfortunately, the MateBook D does not have a card reader, otherwise this set of ports is more than enough to comfortably use the device.

The MateBook D's keyboard layout is reminiscent of a recently tested model MSI P65 Creator 9SF: there is no number block, and the rightmost column is occupied by the Del, Home, PgUp, PgDn and End keys. I’m already used to such ergonomics, so writing this article on the Meitbook turned out to be very comfortable. Keystrokes are crisp and quiet.

True, the laptop buttons are not backlit, and this is a problem if you often work in the evening without the use of artificial lighting.

The touchpad on the MateBook D is small, but there are no complaints about it. The touchpad supports Windows multi-touch gestures as well as handwriting.

The test laptop's webcam runs at 720p at 30Hz. Good image quality can only be obtained from it when you are in a room with good, bright lighting.

#Internal arrangement and upgrade options

In theory, the test sample is very easy to disassemble - you need to unscrew eight screws and carefully remove the bottom. But something didn’t work out - the bottom panel categorically refused to come off, and breaking test equipment is not included in the rules of the 3DNews laboratory. So in terms of internal structure, this time we will have to limit ourselves to theory.

You have already noticed that both versions of the laptop are equipped with only 8 GB of RAM. However intelligence reportsthat the model is equipped with two SO-DIMM slots, one of which contains the DDR4-2400 module. I'm sure that over time it will be absolutely not superfluous to install another such memory chip in this laptop - if, of course, you are more successful than we are in getting inside.

You can also replace the SSD in the MateBook D. The test model has a 2280 GB SATA 256 form factor drive.

As for cooling, a simple cooler, consisting of one heat pipe and one tangential fan, is responsible for removing heat from the CPU. In the second part of the article, we will definitely study the effectiveness of its work.
