New remote and gamepad for NVIDIA Shield TV?

The NVIDIA Shield TV was one of the first Android TV set-top boxes to hit the market and still remains one of the best. Until now, NVIDIA continues to release constant updates for the device, and it seems that another one is under development and it will not just be another firmware.

New remote and gamepad for NVIDIA Shield TV?

The Shield TV is powered by the Tegra X1 SoC, which is also used in the Nintendo Switch, and allows you to freely run any game from the Google Play Store. If this is not enough for you, then the set-top box supports streaming video games from your computer using GameStream (this will require GeForce Experience installed), and in the absence of a powerful computer, NVIDIA Now technology will allow you to run a number of AAA projects from the NVIDIA cloud so that all calculations are performed on the remote server side, you will see a beautiful picture and control the gameplay on your screen. At the same time, it is worth noting that in the basic version, only the remote control is included with the set-top box, while the wireless gamepad is purchased separately.

New remote and gamepad for NVIDIA Shield TV?

XDA Developers is reporting that the latest firmware for the Shield contains references to a "Stormcaster" gamepad and remote control called "Friday", which could potentially replace the current input devices available for the Shield TV.

The last time the set-top box received an update to its hardware was in 2017 and at the moment there are no rumors about the preparation of a new model, at the same time, controllers for Shield TV have never been updated since the release of the first revision of the set-top box in 2015.

Thus, updating the periphery, and the set-top box itself, suggests itself as a matter of course. However, the names mentioned in the code don't tell us too much about these devices other than their type. Both connect via Bluetooth, and apparently the gamepad can also be connected via a USB cable.

An NVIDIA spokesperson issued a statement to XDA Developers: β€œIt is fairly standard practice for various concept codenames to appear in production files. These references remain even when it becomes unlikely that the concept will ever enter production."

Thus, at the moment, an update for the Shield TV is nothing more than a fan's dream, but if the company does release new controllers or updates the set-top box itself, this will undoubtedly serve as another good reason to purchase it.
