NVIDIA Announces Platform to Support AI at the Edge of Computing Networks

Monday at Computex 2019 NVIDIA announced launch of EGX, a platform for accelerating artificial intelligence at the edge of computer networks. The platform combines AI technologies from NVIDIA with security, storage and communication technologies from Mellanox. The NVIDIA Edge platform software stack is optimized for real-time AI services such as computer vision, speech recognition, and data analytics, and also supports Red Hat OpenShift for container orchestration using Kubernetes.

“There has been a huge change in the computing industry driven by the rise of IoT device sensors: cameras to monitor the world, microphones to hear the world, and devices designed to allow machines to detect what’s going on in the real world around them,” says Justin. Justin Boitano, Senior Director of Enterprise and Edge Computing at NVIDIA, at a press briefing. This means that the amount of raw data to be analyzed is exponentially increasing. “We will soon reach the point where there are more computing resources at the edge than in the data center,” Justin says.

NVIDIA EGX will provide accelerated computing for the AI challenge to enable transactions with minimal time delays between interactions. This will allow real-time response to data coming from sensors for 5G base stations, from warehouses, retail stores, factories and other automated facilities. “AI is one of the most important computing tasks of our time, but CPUs can't handle it,” says Boitano.

“Businesses need ever more powerful computing power to process an ocean of incoming data from countless interactions with customers and various equipment to make quick decisions based on artificial intelligence that can drive their business,” says Bob Pette, vice president and CEO of Enterprise Computing and the EGX Platform at NVIDIA. "A scalable platform like NVIDIA EGX allows companies to easily deploy systems to meet their needs either on premises, in the cloud, or a combination of both."

NVIDIA pays special attention to EGX's ability to scale based on the compute requirements of the AI in each case. The initial solution is presented in the form of a compact Nvidia Jetson Nano, which in a few watts can provide half a trillion operations per second for processing tasks such as image recognition. If you need more performance, then a rack of servers Nvidia T4 will give you 10 TOPS for real-time speech recognition and other heavy AI tasks.

EGX servers are available from renowned enterprise computing providers such as ATOS, Cisco, Dell EMC, Fujitsu, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Inspur, and Lenovo, as well as major IoT server and solution manufacturers Abaco, Acer, ADLINK, Advantech, ASRock Rack, ASUS, AverMedia, Cloudian, Connect Tech, Curtiss-Wright, GIGABYTE, Leetop, MiiVii, Musashi Seimitsu, QCT, Sugon, Supermicro, Tyan, WiBase, and Wiwynn.
