NVIDIA Unveils Mobile GeForce GTX 16 Series: Turing for Affordable Gaming Laptops

Beyond the desktop graphics card GeForce GTX 1650, NVIDIA today also introduced the GeForce GTX 16-series mobile graphics accelerators. Currently, NVIDIA offers two discrete graphics cards based on low-end Turing GPUs without hardware ray tracing acceleration for laptops.

The oldest of the new products is the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti video card, which differs from the desktop version only in GPU clock speeds, and, as a result, in power consumption. The novelty is built on the Turing TU116 GPU in its full version with 1536 CUDA cores. It is complemented by 6 GB of GDDR6 video memory with an effective frequency of 12 MHz and a 000-bit bus, which provides a throughput of 192 GB / s.

Like most mobile versions of NVIDIA graphics accelerators of the last two generations, the new GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is available in a standard and economical Max-Q version. In the first case, the graphics processor has frequencies of 1455/1590 MHz. In turn, the Max-Q version offers frequencies of only 1140/1335 MHz. The TDP level is 80 and 60 W, respectively.

The second novelty was the mobile version of the GeForce GTX 1650, which differs not only in frequencies, but also in the GPU configuration, and in a big way. Both the desktop and mobile versions of the GeForce GTX 1650 are based on the Turing TU117. However, if in the first case a “stripped down” GPU with 896 CUDA cores is used, then the mobile version is built on the version with 1024 CUDA cores. But the memory configuration has not changed: 4 GB GDDR5 with a frequency of 8000 MHz and a 128-bit bus.

The GeForce GTX 1650 mobile graphics card will also be available in Max-Q and Standard editions. In the first case, the frequencies will be 1020/1245 MHz, and in the second - 1395/1560 MHz. In this case, the TDP level will be 35 W for the Max-Q version, and 50 W for the full version.

In terms of performance, according to NVIDIA itself, the new GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is more than three times faster than the GeForce GTX 960M. It is also capable of delivering over 100 FPS in modern battle royales like PUBG and Apex. There is also a significant increase in productivity when working with professional tasks such as video editing, photo processing, etc. But the most interesting thing is that, according to NVIDIA, the mobile GeForce GTX 1660 Ti should be up to 50% faster than the mobile GeForce GTX 1060, while the mobile GeForce GTX 1650 will be able to provide a performance increase of up to 70% compared to the GeForce GTX 1050.

Notebook manufacturers are already preparing to release new models of their products with video cards GeForce GTX 1660 Ti and GeForce GTX 1650. New items will cost from $799. Of course, laptops with the older GeForce GTX 1660 Ti will cost more, starting at about $1000.
