About the directions "Photonics", "Programming and IT" and "Information and Cybersecurity" of the Olympiad "I am a professional"

We continue to tell about the “I Am a Professional” Olympiad, supported by Yandex, the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, and the largest universities in the country, including ITMO University.

Today we are talking about three more areas that our university oversees.

About the directions "Photonics", "Programming and IT" and "Information and Cybersecurity" of the Olympiad "I am a professional"

Information and cyber security

This direction is suitable for those who intend to enter the specialty in the field of security of computer systems and networks, protection of information in automated systems or administration of network devices. ITMO University has an international educational program "Information Securityorganized in partnership with Finnish Aalto University. Undergraduates can choose specialties: “IS of specialized systems” or “Cyber security in the banking sector”.

In all these areas, ITMO University is actively developing. Students and teachers of the faculty study the issues of security of computer, cyber-physical systems and machine design of on-board computers. For example, students are working on methods of repelling attacks on motherboard firmware using a hypervisor. On the basis of the faculty there is also a laboratory "secure information technology". Its employees act as computer forensics and help customers build a secure IT infrastructure.

Also, within the department, ITMO University employees develop CODA project. This is a system for detecting malicious requests to the core of a computer system.

The expertise of ITMO University teachers is reflected in the Olympiad tasks of the Information and Cyber Security area. Specialists from Kaspersky Lab, INFOWATCH and Sberbank also help to compile them.

What will be the tasks. Among the topics are: symmetric and asymmetric, post-quantum cryptography, data transmission in computer networks, OS security. There are also questions on logic and reverse. There will be no “paper security” here, so you don’t need to memorize the numbers of the Federal Law.

How to prepare. After registration, the participants of the Olympiad get access to demo versions of the options with the tasks of the qualifying stage of the previous year. Examples can also be found on the website. cit.ifmo.ru/profi. Note that the website is currently under reconstruction, but it will be launched soon.

It is also useful to pay attention to the write-ups of various CTF competitions around the world. Useful materials are also in the Vkontakte group SPbCTF, the ideological inspirers of which are the partners of the Information and Cybersecurity direction.

Programming and Information Technology

ITMO University holds many competitions in computer science for both students and schoolchildren. For example, there is Individual Olympiad for Schoolchildren in Informatics and Programming, as well as the first level Olympiad Olympus - it is on the basis of its results that the largest number of bachelors enter our university. The university also acts as a venue for the stages of the World Cup ICPC. The tasks of the "Programming and IT" direction take into account the experience of conducting these events. Colleagues from partner companies help to compile them: Sberbank, Netcracker and STC.

What will be the tasks. The subjects of assignments cover a wide range of disciplines: programming, algorithms and data structures, information theory, databases and data warehouses, computer architecture, operating systems, computer networks, UML, multi-threaded programming. Students must demonstrate knowledge in computational complexity theory. For example, in 2017, students were asked to analyze code that simulates the operation of the request queue.

How to prepare. Look at examples from previous years. For example, on YouTube channel Olympiad "I am a professional" there are recordings of webinars with problem analysis. In this video, the speaker talks about storage systems:

Since a number of tasks are presented in the format of automatic verification of the participants' code on tests, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with compiler settings и error values testing system Yandex Contest.

Photonics

Photonics studies the interaction of light with matter and generally includes all aspects of the propagation of optical radiation: from the generation and transmission of light signals to the development of unique functional materials, laser technologies, integrated optoelectronic devices, space and medical technology, quantum communications and light design.

ITMO University is doing a lot of research in these areas. Works on the basis of the university School of Light Design, School of Laser Technology и Student Science Laboratory of Optics (SNLO), where students carry out their own projects under the guidance of mentors.

Also, on the basis of the university, the Museum of Optics was opened, where various optical exhibits are presented. Museum photo tour we spent in one of the previous materials.

About the directions "Photonics", "Programming and IT" and "Information and Cybersecurity" of the Olympiad "I am a professional"

To participate in the Olympiad "I am a professional" in the direction of "Photonics" we invite bachelors, masters and students of a specialist in such areas of training as photonics and optoinformatics, optotechnics, laser technology and laser technologies. We also note instrumentation, biotechnical systems, physics, astronomy, etc. The winners-bachelors will be able to go to the master's program without entrance examinations Megafaculty of Photonics ITMO University.

In 2020, applicants can choose from 14 programs different orientation. For example, corporate "Applied Optics", industrial "Light-emitting diode technologies and optoelectronics", scientific "Quantum communications and femtotechnologies".

What will be the tasks. To successfully complete the correspondence course, you must have basic knowledge of the fundamentals of physical and geometric optics, laser radiation generation, optical materials science and shaping, design, metrology and standardization.

Example of task #1: Match what optical phenomena are shown in the figure? A - Rainbow, B - Mirage, C - Halo

About the directions "Photonics", "Programming and IT" and "Information and Cybersecurity" of the Olympiad "I am a professional"

Participants of the face-to-face round will have to show systematic thinking and creativity, demonstrate skills in project activities. Case studies were developed jointly with industrial partners and are practice-oriented. Here is an example of such a task:

Example of task #2: Optical technologies are widely used in navigation devices, in particular, laser gyroscopes, which have a very high sensitivity, but are characterized by high cost and rather large dimensions. For most applications less sensitive but cheap fiber optic gyroscopes (FOG) are used.

About the directions "Photonics", "Programming and IT" and "Information and Cybersecurity" of the Olympiad "I am a professional"
The action of all optical gyroscopes is based on the Sagnac effect. For counterpropagating waves propagating in opposite directions, a phase shift appears in a closed loop if this closed loop rotates with a certain angular frequency ω, namely:

$inline$Δφ=2π ΔL/λ$inline$, where About the directions "Photonics", "Programming and IT" and "Information and Cybersecurity" of the Olympiad "I am a professional" is the optical path difference between the opposing waves.

  1. Derive formulas (neglecting relativistic effects) for the dependence of the phase difference on the area S, limited by one turn of the optical fiber, and the circular rotation frequency of the FOG Ω.
  2. Estimate the minimum allowable dimensions of such a fiber gyroscope (the radius of its ring) if a single-mode fiber with a refractive index n = 1,5 and a diameter d = 1 mm is used.
  3. Determine the required fiber length at the smallest possible radius if the sensitivity of the FOG to rotational speed, expressed in units of ΔφC/Ωμ, is 1 µrad (that is, when Ω = Ωμ).
  4. Determine the minimum required source energy to ensure the sensitivity defined in Section 3, that is, assume that the receiver sensitivity is limited by photon shot noise.

How to prepare. Students need to "pull up" quantum physics, quantum optics, solid state physics and mathematics. In preparation, watch webinars where representatives of the methodological commission analyze the tasks of the correspondence round of the Olympiad. For example, in the following video Polozkov Roman Grigorievich, Leading Researcher and Associate Professor of the Faculty of Physics and Technology, talks about interference, diffraction and polarization of light:

It is also worth paying attention to courses dedicated to photonics, from this MOOC list.
