Oracle Introduces Autonomous Linux to Create Maintenance-Free Systems

Oracle Company presented New Product Autonomous Linux, which is an extension of Oracle Linux, a key feature of which is to provide offline operation, without the need for manual maintenance and administrator involvement. The product is offered as a free option for Oracle Cloud users with a Linux Premier Support subscription.

Autonomous Linux allows you to automatically perform tasks such as provisioning, applying patches, and optimizing settings (via profile switching). In combination with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure services such as the Oracle OS Management Service, the product also provides deployment automation, virtual environment lifecycle management, and resource constraint scaling. Currently, Autonomous Linux is only available on Oracle Cloud, publishing a variant for stand-alone use expected later.

A user or system administrator can click one button to install Autonomous Linux in a virtual machine or on a real server, after which the system will be kept up to date automatically without the need to schedule downtime for scheduled updates. When used in cloud environments, Autonomous Linux is expected to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) by 30-50%.

Autonomous Linux is based on the regular Oracle Linux distribution and technology Ksplice, which allows you to make corrections to the Linux kernel without rebooting. Provides full binary compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The product continues the development of the ideas of the Oracle Autonomous DBMS, which does not require maintenance to keep it up to date. Until now, the bottleneck in Oracle Autonomous has been the operating system, which requires administrator maintenance. With the advent of Autonomous Linux, users have the ability to deploy complete, self-updating configurations that do not require supervision.
