A TelecomDaily study suggests that the Russian market for online video services, against the backdrop of a pandemic and self-isolation of citizens, showed rapid growth in the first half of this year.

In the period from January to June inclusive, the revenue of legal Internet cinemas reached 18,64 billion rubles. This is one and a half times (56%) more than in the first half of 2019.

Thus, according to analysts, according to the results of the first half of 2020, the growth rate of the industry turned out to be much higher than usual - before that, the market expanded by 35-45%.

β€œThe paid model continues to increase its share and dominate the advertising model: in the structure of revenue at the end of 2019, it accounted for 70%, now it is 74%. In the first half of the year, the advertising model for the first time yielded to the purchase of video on demand 26% versus 27,1%, the share of the subscription model was 46,9%,” the study says.

The largest players in the Russian market in terms of revenue are ivi and Okko with shares of 23% and 17%, respectively. Another 9% comes from YouTube. Thus, these three players control almost half of the industry.

According to analysts' forecasts, if the current growth rate is maintained, the market volume by the end of 2020 as a whole can reach 41,86 billion rubles.
