Re-releases of Bethesda's first three Dooms will no longer need Internet access
The other day, publisher Bethesda Softworks presented re-releases of the first three Doom games for current consoles and mobile devices - these games, to put it mildly, did not receive the warmest reception. All projects required a Bethesda.net account (and therefore an Internet connection), which disappointed many fans of a series of games that began in an era when home Internet access was still a curiosity.
This has spawned a lot of memes when players began to post pictures of old games, which display the requirement to connect a Bethesda.net account. Fortunately, the publisher listened to the reaction of the gaming community: the company promised to release a fix that would make the Bethesda.net account optional and allow exterminating demons regardless of whether the player is online.
Bethesda Softworks explained the network connection requirement by saying that it wanted to reward members of the Doom Slayers Club for playing Doom, Doom 2 and Doom 3. Although this will certainly be useful for those who play the more recent Doom 2016 (or plans to purchase Doom Eternal); for everyone else who just wants to immerse themselves in nostalgia, the requirement only annoys and causes unnecessary trouble.
Update on our new classic DOOM releases:
The BethesdaNet login requirement was included for the Slayers Club, to reward members for playing the classic DOOM games.
The login should be optional, and we are working on changing the requirement to optional now.
Several other complaints were also voiced by players, including the addition of copy protection technologies, graphical changes made (such as filtering to soften 1993 pixel art), and an apparent slowdown in music tempo on the Nintendo Switch. Not to mention the removal of versions of these games from the digital platforms of PS3 and Xbox 360.
