Analyst firm NPD Group has released its annual report on console sales in the United States of America over the past 10 years. The Nintendo Switch was the most successful system of 2019. But over the past decade, the PlayStation 4 has generally outperformed all competitors.
“Nintendo Switch was the top-selling hardware platform in both December and 2019,” said NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. “While the PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console of the decade.” The PlayStation 4 has sold over 106 million consoles, putting it ahead of the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3.
But in 2019, U.S. console spending has plummeted as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are close to debut. And last year, there was no massive release at the level of Red Dead Redemption 2 that forces people to buy new systems. In addition, by 2019, consoles simply saturated the market.
“Console spending in December 2019 was down 17% year-over-year to $973 million,” Piscatella said. - Annual spending on consoles fell 22% to $3,9 billion. Growth in sales of the Nintendo Switch has not been able to offset the decline in demand for other platforms.”
The NPD Group expects console costs to continue to decline until the next generation is released.
