The hh.ru research service, together with the MADE Big Data Academy from Mail.ru, compiled a portrait of a Data Science specialist in Russia. Having studied 8 thousand resumes of Russian data scientists and 5,5 thousand vacancies of employers, we found out where Data Science specialists live and work, how old they are, what university they graduated from, what programming languages ​​they speak and how many academic degrees they have.

Demand

Since 2015, the need for specialists has been constantly growing. In 2018, the number of jobs under the heading Data Scientist increased 7 times compared to 2015, and jobs with keywords Machine Learning Specialist - 5 times. At the same time, in the first half of 2019, the demand for Data Science specialists amounted to 65% of the demand for the entire 2018.

Demography

Mostly men work in the profession, among data scientists their share is 81%. More than half of the people looking for a job in data analysis are professionals aged 25-34. There are still few women in the profession - 19%. But it is interesting that young girls are showing more and more interest in Data Science. Among the women who posted resumes, almost 40% are girls aged 18-24.

But the resumes of older applicants are quite small - only 3% of data scientists are over 45 years old. According to expert estimates, this may be due to several factors: firstly, there are few older people in Data Science, and secondly, job seekers with extensive work experience are less likely to post their resumes on large search resources and more often find work through recommendations.

Dislocation

More than half of the vacancies (60%) and applicants (64%) are located in Moscow. Also, specialists in the field of data analysis are in demand in St. Petersburg, in the Novosibirsk and Sverdlovsk regions and in the Republic of Tatarstan.

Education

9 out of 10 professionals looking for a job in the field of data analysis have higher education. Among people who graduated from universities, there is a large proportion of those who continue to develop in science and have managed to get a degree: 8% have a Ph.D., 1% - Doctor of Science.

Most of the specialists looking for a job in the field of Data Science studied at one of the following universities: at the Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman, Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, National Research University Higher School of Economics, St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, NSU, KFU. Employers are also loyal to these universities.

43% of specialists in Data Science noted that, in addition to higher education, they received at least one additional education. Most often, the summary mentions online courses in machine learning and data analysis on Coursera.

Popular Skills

Among the key skills, Data Scientists list Python (74%), SQL (45%), Git (25%), Data Analysis (24%) and Data Mining (22%) in their resumes. Those specialists who write about their expertise in machine learning in their resumes also mention the knowledge of Linux and C ++. The most popular programming languages ​​for Data Science specialists are: Python, C++, Java, C#, JavaScript.

How do they work

Employers believe that data scientists should work in a full-time office. 86% of the posted vacancies are full-time, 9% are flexible, and only 5% of vacancies include a remote job offer.
