TLP 1.3 utility introduced to improve battery life of Linux laptops

After 8 months of development there was released release of a power management tool for Linux OS called TLP 1.3. It is designed to save battery and optimize the operation of the power system. As noted, the system allows for fine-tuning and can also determine whether the laptop is running on battery power or mains power.

To optimize, the application can reduce the processor frequency, reduce screen brightness, disable wireless communications, and so on. You can also set time settings for parking disks and more. Functionally, this is similar to similar settings in Windows.

TLP runs as a system service and does not have a graphical interface by default, although the TLPUI shell is available. Although it has not yet been updated to support version 1.3, it is expected to be soon.

In terms of updates, the latest version of TLP 1.3 comes with a new scheme that uses configuration files instead of source code. Another new feature is the tlp-stat tool, which displays the current configuration, system information, active power saving options, and battery information in the console.

There are other changes, but they are more related to bug fixes. By the way, in parallel with TLP 1.3, you can install the auto-cpufreq utility, which automatically adjusts the processor frequency to maximize the laptop's battery life.

Packages are available in the repositories of all major Linux distributions.
