USB Type-C port issue on Lenovo laptops may be caused by Thunderbolt firmware

According to online sources, problems with the USB Type-C interface that some owners of Lenovo ThinkPad laptops have encountered may be caused by the firmware of the Thunderbolt controller. Cases where the USB Type-C port on ThinkPad laptops completely or partially stops working have been recorded since August last year.

USB Type-C port issue on Lenovo laptops may be caused by Thunderbolt firmware

Lenovo began releasing ThinkPad series laptops with a built-in USB Type-C interface in 2017, and later this port began to be used for charging. A few months ago, there were reports that owners of some laptops from 2017, 2018 and 2019 were experiencing a number of problems related to USB Type-C. From user reports on the Lenovo technical support site, it can be concluded that the problem is expressed in different ways. Sometimes USB Type-C loses all its functionality, while in other cases the laptop stops charging through this connector. Sometimes problems with the Thunderbolt controller cause the HDMI connector to malfunction or cause error messages to appear.

Despite the fact that Lenovo officials do not comment on this issue, we can conclude that the cause of the problems lies in the Thunderbolt controller. This conclusion is supported by the fact that the problems only occur on ThinkPad laptops that are equipped with Thunderbolt.

The report also says that Lenovo has released updated versions of drivers and firmware for the problematic laptops. Users who encounter problems with the functioning of USB Type-C are recommended to install updates. If this does not solve the problem, you should contact the manufacturer's technical support, as the motherboard may need to be replaced.
