The KiCad project comes under the auspices of the Linux Foundation

A project developing a free computer-aided PCB design system Kicad, moved under the auspices of the Linux Foundation. Developers expectthat development under the auspices of the Linux Foundation will attract additional resources for the development of the project and will provide the opportunity to develop new services not directly related to development. The Linux Foundation, as a neutral platform for interaction with manufacturers, will also attract new participants to the project. Additionally, KiCad will take part in the initiative CommunityBridge, aimed at organizing interaction between open source software developers and companies and individuals who are ready to provide financial support to certain developers or important projects.

KiCad provides tools for editing electrical circuits and printed circuit boards, 3D visualization of the board, working with a library of electrical circuit elements, manipulating templates in the format Tanner and project management. Assemblies prepared by for Windows, macOS and various Linux distributions. The code is written in C++ using the wxWidgets library, and spreads licensed under GPLv3. According to some PCB manufacturers, about 15% of orders come with schematics prepared in KiCad.
