Brave browser developers have improved built-in ad blockers

The developers of the Brave browser, known for its love of user privacy, presented improved algorithms for ad blocking. It is reported that on average one website includes 75 requests that need to be blocked, and this number may increase in the future. Therefore, the developers presented updates in the Nightly and Dev improvement channels.

Brave browser developers have improved built-in ad blockers

It is reported that their development is based on other blockers, in particular, on the syntax of the Adblock Plus filter, the data structure of Bloom Filter, the developments of Cliqz, and so on. The program code was written in Rust. This reportedly speeds up query processing by approximately 69 times.

However, we note that the ad blocker is built into the core of the browser, and is not implemented as an extension, which provides even better performance and allows you to avoid some duplicative actions. Testing was conducted on a 2018 MacBook Pro laptop with a 7 GHz Intel Core i2,6 processor and 32 GB of RAM.

It is still difficult to say how much better this approach will be in reality, rather than in laboratory conditions. However, the fact that the Brave developers ignored Google's infamous Manifest V3 is certainly encouraging. If the good corporation does go ahead with its plan, it will allow Brave and other alternative browsers to gain market share by being able to offer better ad blocking.
