Pango developers removed support for bitmap fonts

Members Fedora 31 faced termination display bitmap fonts in almost all graphics applications. In particular, the use of such fonts as Terminus and ucs-miscfixed became impossible in the GNOME terminal emulator. The problem is caused by the developers of the library pango, used to draw the text, stopped support for such fonts in the latest version 1.44, referring to the problematic interfaces of the FreeType library (switched from FreeType to the rendering engine HarfBuzz, which does not support bitmap fonts).

There are two options for solving the problem:

  • Purchase monitors with a high pixel density (Hi-DPI), as they do not have problems displaying fonts.
  • Using various utilities, for example, FontForge to convert such fonts to a new format that Pango can understand. In this case, there are serious problems, including with kerning.

There is also a third option - downgrading the library version or building its previous version from source, which can be difficult for most users.
