Thunderbird development transferred to MZLA Technologies Corporation

Thunderbird mail client developers announced the on the transfer of project development to a separate company MZLA Technologies Corporation, which is a subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation. So far Thunderbird was under the auspices of the Mozilla Foundation, which oversaw financial and legal issues, but the infrastructure and development of Thunderbird were separated from Mozilla and the project developed separately. The transfer to a separate division is due to the desire to more clearly separate the processes associated with development and the processing of incoming donations.

It is noted that the volume of donations from Thunderbird users, which has increased in recent years, now allows the project to develop successfully on its own. Moving to a separate company will increase the flexibility of processes, for example, it will make it possible to independently hire staff, act more quickly and implement ideas that would not be possible as part of the Mozilla Foundation. Specifically, mention is made of the formation of Thunderbird-related products and services, as well as revenue generation through partnerships and non-charitable donations. Structural changes will not affect the workflow, mission, composition of the development team, release schedule, or the open nature of the project.
