Kotaku editor predicts Stadia to be a "colossal failure" as pre-orders fall below Google's expectations

Kotaku News Editor Jason Schreier in my microblog shared his thoughts about the prospects for the Stadia cloud service from Google. According to the journalist, the service already looks like a “colossal failure.”

“I don’t think Google will give up on Stadia quickly—[the company] is creating multiple studios at once—as we speak—but it was extremely stupid of them to think that they could sell games at full price on this thing. We have to change, even if it means losing some blockbusters,” считает Schreyer.

According to the journalist, such an approach in modern society no longer makes sense: “It’s almost as if the service was invented by industry veterans who decided that if it worked for them in 2006, it would work in 2020.”

The chosen business model is already affecting the popularity of Stadia. A source familiar with the situation told Schreier that pre-orders for the service's starter kits were lower than expected.

Stadia as a service is free, but to access the service in 2019, you must purchase the Founder's Edition or Premiere Edition for $129, which includes a proprietary controller, Chromecast Ultra, and three months of Stadia Pro.

Apart from the bundle, Stadia Pro costs $10. For this money, the user gets the opportunity to play in 4K resolution at 60 frames/s, as well as one or more free projects. Everything else will have to be purchased separately.

The launch of Stadia took place on November 19 in 14 countries, including Russia. IN first reviews reviewers complain about input lags, technical issues, and the service's general lack of readiness for release.
