Release of Tails 3.16 distribution and Tor Browser 8.5.5

One day late formed release of a specialized distribution Tails 3.16 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System), based on the Debian package base and designed to provide anonymous access to the network. Anonymous exit to Tails is provided by the Tor system. All connections, except traffic through the Tor network, are blocked by default by the packet filter. Encryption is used to store user data in the save user data between runs mode. Ready for download iso image, capable of working in Live mode, 1 GB in size.

The new release of Tails updates versions of Tor Browser 8.5.5, Thunderbird 60.8 and the Linux kernel (4.19.37-5+deb10u2), which fixes the vulnerability SWAPGS (Specter v1 variant). The LibreOffice Math application has been removed from the distribution, which, if necessary, can be installed through the Install Additional Programs Wizard. Discontinued delivery of a predefined set of bookmarks in Tor Browser and automatically generated I2P and IRC accounts in Pidgin. Updated firmware set. The code for hiding disk partitions with Tails user data has been reworked.

Simultaneously, released a new version of the Tor Browser 8.5.5, focused on ensuring anonymity, security and privacy. The new version has switched to using a new stable branch Gate 0.4.1, and the NoScript 11.0.3 add-on has been updated. Tor Browser for Android now supports building for the Aarch64 architecture (arm64-v8a).

The release is in sync with the Firefox 60.9.0 ESR codebase, which eliminated 10 vulnerabilities, of which two problems, collected under CVE-2019-11740, can potentially lead to the execution of attacker code. More two problems (CVE-2019-9812) allow you to bypass sandbox isolation through manipulation of Firefox Sync. Tor Browser 8.5.5 will be the last release in the Tor Browser 8.5 series; Tor Browser 68 will be released in October based on the new ESR branch of Firefox 9.0.
