Release of the minimalist distribution kit Alpine Linux 3.11

Took place Release Alpine Linux 3.11, a minimalistic distribution built on the basis of the system library musl and a set of utilities BusyBox. The distribution is distinguished by increased security requirements and is built with SSP (Stack Smashing Protection) protection. OpenRC is used as an initialization system, and its own apk package manager is used for package management. Alpine applies to build official Docker container images. Boot iso images (x86_64, x86, armhf, aarch64, armv7, ppc64le, s390x) are prepared in five versions: standard (130 MB), unpatched kernel (120 MB), advanced (424 MB) and for virtual machines (36 MB).

In the new release:

  • Initial support for GNOME and KDE desktops;
  • Support for Vulkan graphics API and DXVK layer with Direct3D 10/11 implementation on top of Vulkan;
  • Support MinGW-w64;
  • Availability of the Rust compiler for all architectures except for s390x;
  • Support for Raspberry Pi 4 boards (builds for aarch64 and armv7);
  • Package version update: Linux kernel 5.4, GCC 9.2.0
