Resident Evil 2 remake has already overtaken Resident Evil 7 in sales on Steam

Released on January 25, the remake of Resident Evil 2 sold four million copies, and although it is quite far from Resident Evil 7 (only 6,1 million copies sold), in some ways the modernized game of 1998 managed to get ahead of the previous part of the series. We are talking about the number of units sold on Steam - the remake already has more than a million owners.

The information became known thanks to the SteamSpy service. The number of owners of the remake is somewhere between one and two million (it is impossible to calculate exactly), while Resident Evil 7 has not yet broken the platinum mark. It is important to emphasize that the newest game is not yet two months old, and the second one has been on sale for more than two years. The statistics take into account not only direct sales, but also activation keys purchased from third-party distributors.

In the entire history of the series, only two parts have crossed the millionth milestone on Steam - Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. These are the most successful games in the franchise: according to Capcom's official data, the first has 7,4 million, and the second - 7,2 million copies sold. Monster Hunter: World, Capcom's best-selling game, also sells well in the Valve store: PC is the second most popular action RPG platform. It is also the biggest start of a computer game in the history of the publisher (in second place is Devil May Cry 5, and the third just went to the remade Resident Evil 2).

Meanwhile, developers continue to publish video diaries that talk about the creation of the game. Among other things, in the first one, they told that they had been working on the interface of the remake for a whole year and during this time they tried many options (even tried to design it in the form of a gadget that the heroes could carry with them).

From the second video, it became known about one of the most interesting features sent to the trash - a driven car. Most of the game takes place indoors, but the heroes could get out into the fresh air more often. The authors wanted to allow gamers to get to the Umbrella laboratory by car (with a first-person view), and then use the cable car. They also planned to give players the ability to switch to the classic camera, but there were difficulties. The moments of the zombie attack had to be shown close, and the transitions between fixed angles and close-ups from behind the shoulder did not look too good. Experiments with the perspective from the first person also turned out to be unsuccessful (however, the modders came out tolerably both options).

Something was told about graphic effects. According to visual effects artist Yoshiki Adachi, when the characters walk through the flooded rooms, bubbles form in the water from their movements. However, this is such a subtle detail that many do not notice them at all. The blood, which was given special attention, is actually translucent - this is also why it looks so realistic.

The third was attended by the famous game designer Hideki Kamiya, director of development of the original Resident Evil 2, who has been working at Platinum Games since 2006. He noted that the remake turned out to be truly frightening, and praised the authors for believable zombies and design decisions. For example, in the remake, enemies retain damage taken, while in the original this feature was impossible to implement, since each room had its own data. The player might not have enough one bullet to kill the enemy, and after leaving the room, the damage counter was reset. Also, in the new version, corpses do not disappear - in the nineties, this could not be done due to a limited amount of memory (new enemies could no longer appear in their presence).

The Resident Evil 2 remake was released not only for PC, but also for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
