The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Communications (Roskomnadzor) sent ten VPN service owners requests to connect to the Federal State Information System (FSIS).

Roskomnadzor threatens to block VPN services

In accordance with the laws in force in Russia, VPN services (as well as anonymizers and search engine operators) are required to restrict access to Internet resources prohibited in our country. To do this, the owners of VPN systems must connect to the FSIS, which contains a list of prohibited sites. However, not all services fulfill these requirements.

Reportedly, notifications about the need to connect to the FSIS were sent to NordVPN, Hide My Ass!, Hola VPN, Openvpn, VyprVPN, ExpressVPN, TorGuard, IPVanish, Kaspersky Secure Connection and VPN Unlimited.

VPN services have 30 days to meet the requirements. β€œIf a fact of non-compliance with the obligations stipulated by law is revealed, Roskomnadzor may decide to restrict access to the VPN service,” the Russian agency said in a statement.

In other words, if the listed services do not connect to the FSIS within the established timeframe, they may be blocked.

Let's add that at present the operators of search engines "Yandex", "Sputnik", Mail.ru, Rambler are connected to the FSIS. Requests to connect to this system have not previously been sent to VPN services and anonymizers.
