This past year marked the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web, the 28th anniversary of the core Linux, 25 years of the .RU zone, and 21 years of our beloved website. Overall, 2019 was a mixed bag.
Yes, KDE, Gnome and other free projects were getting better and better right before our eyes, the core Linux The bash interpreter and Linux kernel gained the number "5" in their version designation, and work on open-source smartphones gained momentum. The openSUSE distribution became independent from commercial companies, and Manjaro acquired a legal entity. The community finally paid significant attention to long-standing Linux issues, such as poor performance when running low on RAM, and Wayland began working much better.
On the other hand, the state's assault on internet freedom escalated throughout the year. A patent lawsuit was filed against the Gnome Foundation. A terrible scandal rocked the Free Software Foundation and the GNU Project, leading to the resignation of legendary FSF leader Richard Stallman.
The "magnanimous dictator for life" of the Python language, Guido van Rossum, has also retired. Alas, time flies—you can't catch him. We, too, are growing old and losing our comrades prematurely. Let's hope that new generations will be worthy replacements, smarter, more talented, and kinder than us, that the world will become richer and freer, and that Linux and free software will become faster, more powerful, and more beautiful!
