openSUSE community discusses rebranding to distance itself from SUSE

Stasiek Michalski, one of the active members of the openSUSE Artwork Team, put up to discuss the advisability of rebranding openSUSE. Currently, SUSE and the free openSUSE project share a common logo, which causes confusion and distorted perception of the project by potential users. On the other hand, the SUSE and openSUSE projects are inextricably linked, especially after the transition to using common packages of the base system, which emphasizes the similarity of the logos.

In addition to the overlap with the SUSE brand, there are technical reasons for changing the logo, such as too bright color to print on a light background, poor scaling, and unsuitability for very small buttons. The logo is hard to read and loses recognition even at 48×48. In addition, there is a desire to have a logo that could identify the project without text, only by the image (now SUSE and openSUSE icons use the same green chameleon image).

The discussion also mentions the issue of renaming the project in order to get rid of the intersection with the SUSE brand (similar to how Fedora and CentOS are not tied to the Red Hat brand), avoiding confusion with the case of letters in the name (instead of openSUSE they often write OpenSUSE, OpenSuSe etc.) and taking into account the wishes of the Open Source Foundation regarding the term “open”. At the first stage, the community is asked to decide whether to change the logo and name, after which it will be possible to start discussing possible options.

Consideration is being given to establishing an independent organization, the openSUSE Foundation, to which the new trademarks for the project will be transferred. If you continue to use the current logo and name, the establishment of the openSUSE Foundation will require a special transfer agreement to use the SUSE brand.
