TSMC is not interested in new asset purchases for the near future

In early February of this year, Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS) has acquired GlobalFoundries has Singapore's Fab 3E, which has processed 200 mm silicon wafers with MEMS products. Later arose there are a lot of rumors about interest in other GlobalFoundries assets of Chinese manufacturers or the South Korean company Samsung, but representatives of the latter stubbornly denied everything.

With this situation in mind, a Morgan Stanley representative at TSMC's quarterly reporting conference asked CEO C Wei (CC Wei) if the company was interested in acquiring new businesses outside of Taiwan. The answer of the head of TSMC was extremely laconic: "Now there are no such plans." Wei immediately added that if a deal appears on the horizon that is in the interests of TSMC's strategy, then buying assets and acquiring other companies can be considered, but there are no such plans in the near future.

TSMC remains a shareholder of VIS, and therefore indirectly participated in the acquisition of Singapore-based GlobalFoundries, which it inherited from Chartered Semiconductor in 2009. Last year, GlobalFoundries was forced to admit that it was refusing to master the 7nm technology. The "lithographic arms race" became too expensive for AMD's largest partner, and after the sale of Fab 3E to VIS, talks about the possibility of further optimization of the GlobalFoundries asset structure became more frequent.

However, for TSMC, the remaining enterprises of GlobalFoundries are not a tasty morsel at all. The Taiwanese contract manufacturer is investing in the construction of new facilities that will master the production of 5nm and even 3nm products in the next decade. It is often much more difficult to remake someone else's than to build your own from scratch. From this point of view, the interests of TSMC are more in line with "organic development" through the construction of new enterprises in-house.
