In 2022, a phantom mannequin will go to the ISS to study radiation

At the beginning of the next decade, a special mannequin phantom will be delivered to the International Space Station (ISS) to study the effects of radiation on the human body. This is reported by TASS, referring to the statements of the head of the department of radiation safety of manned space flights of the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vyacheslav Shurshakov.

Now in orbit is the so-called spherical phantom. More than 500 passive detectors are placed inside and on the surface of this Russian development. Radiation doses in the critical organs of a crew member are determined precisely with the help of a spherical phantom, therefore, the presence of a large number of detectors makes it possible to formulate the requirements for the volume of radiation monitoring on the surface of the cosmonaut's body as accurately as possible.

β€œNow the phantom mannequin is preparing to fly. It should fly to the ISS in 2022,” Mr. Shurshakov said.

The new dummy will help assess the radiation load on the astronaut's body during a space flight. The phantom will be made of a material that absorbs radiation in much the same way as the human body.
