Chrome plans to turn on intrusive video ad blocking

Google company ΠΎΠΏΡƒΠ±Π»ΠΈΠΊΠΎΠ²Π°Π»Π° implementation plan for blocking inappropriate types of video ads in Chrome, proposed Advertising Improvement CoalitionBetter Ads Standard) in the new version Recommendations to block inappropriate ads displayed while watching a video.

The recommendations take into account the main reasons for user dissatisfaction, forcing the installation of blockers. To identify annoying types of advertising, a survey of about 45 users from 8 countries covering about 60% of the Internet advertising market was used. As a result, three main types of annoying ads were identified, which are shown before the start of the display, during the viewing or after the end of viewing video content with a duration of no more than 8 minutes:

  • Interstitials of any duration that interrupt the video in the middle of viewing;
  • Long commercials (longer than 31 seconds) displayed before the start of the video, without the ability to skip them 5 seconds after the start of the ad;
  • Display large text ads or image ads on top of the video if they cover more than 20% of the video or are displayed in the middle of the window (in the middle third of the window).

In accordance with the recommendations, Google intends to include in Chrome on August 5 the blocking of ad units that fall under the above criteria. The blocking will apply to all ads on the site (without filtering out specific problematic blocks) if the owner does not promptly eliminate the identified problems. You can see the status of checking ad inserts on the site in special section tools for web developers.

With respect to YouTube.com and its Google-owned advertising platforms, the company intends to review the types of advertising it displays on its services to ensure they meet the new requirements.
