The Institute for System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISP RAS) has formed a consortium aimed at organizing cooperation between Russian companies, educational institutions and research institutes in the field of Linux kernel security research and elimination of identified vulnerabilities. The consortium was created on the basis of the Technology Center for Research on the Security of Operating Systems Based on the Linux Kernel, established in 2021.
It is expected that the formation of the consortium will eliminate duplication of work in the field of security research, will promote the implementation of the principles of secure development, attract additional participants to work on kernel security and strengthen the work already carried out at the Technology Center to identify and eliminate vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel. As for the work already done, 154 corrections prepared by the employees of the Technology Center have been accepted into the core of the core.
In addition to identifying and eliminating vulnerabilities, the Technology Center is also working on the formation of the Russian branch of the Linux kernel (based on the 5.10 kernel, git with code) and its synchronization with the main Linux kernel, developing tools for static, dynamic and architectural analysis of the kernel, creating methods for testing the kernel and developing recommendations for the secure development of operating systems based on the Linux kernel. The partners of the Technology Center include such companies as Basalt SPO, Baikal Electronics, STC Module, MCST, NPPKT, Open Mobile Platform, RED SOFT, RusBITech-Astra, "NTC IT ROSA", "FINTECH" and "YANDEX.CLOUD".
