Ubuntu 19.10 introduces experimental ZFS support for root partition

Canonical Company reported about giving Ubuntu 19.10 the ability to install a distribution using the ZFS file system on the root partition. Implementation is based on using the project ZFS on Linux, supplied as a module for the Linux kernel, which, starting with Ubuntu 16.04, is included in the regular distribution of the package with the kernel.

In Ubuntu 19.10, ZFS support will be upgraded to 0.8.1, and an experimental option has been added to the desktop edition installer to apply ZFS to all partitions, including the root. Appropriate changes will be made to GRUB, including an option in the boot menu to rollback changes using ZFS snapshots.

A new daemon is in development to manage ZFS zsys, which will allow you to run several parallel systems with ZFS on one computer, automates the creation of snapshots and manages the separation of system and data that changes during the user session. The main idea is that in different snapshots you can contain different states of the system and switch between them. For example, in case of problems after installing updates, you can return to the old stable state by selecting the last snapshot. Snapshots will also be used to transparently automatically back up user data.
