The UK government has proposed in a public debate on building codes that all new homes should be equipped with electric vehicle charging points in the future. This measure, along with a number of others, is believed by the government to increase the popularity of electric transport in the country.
The government plans to end sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles in the UK by 2040, although there is talk of moving that date closer to 2030 or 2035.
It is also expected that all "recently installed more powerful charging points, as well as points with fast charging support" will offer payment options for services with debit or credit cards by spring 2020.
UK Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said there is a need for cleaner transport.
βCharging at home provides the most convenient and cost-effective option for consumers β you can simply plug in your car to charge it overnight, just like a cell phone,β Grayling said.
The UK has set itself the ambitious goal of achieving zero emissions by 2050, and electric vehicles are seen as the main means to achieve this.
