The Mars 2020 rover made its first test ride almost six months after installing the wheels. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA JPL) reported that during the test drive, the rover successfully moved and made turns, following commands, on a small ramp covered with special mats.
According to Rich Rieber, project lead engineer for mobility systems, the rover has "earned a driver's license."
“The test proved unequivocally that the rover can operate under its own weight and demonstrated many of the autonomous navigation features for the first time. This is an important milestone for Mars 2020,” said Rieber.
