The Lightweight Wayland Desktop Environment (LWDE) distribution is now available, providing a pre-configured, ready-to-use desktop environment based on the Labwc composite server. The distribution is built on a package base. Ubuntu 24.04 using its own repository. The project may be useful for enthusiasts looking to create their own environment for migrating from LXDE to environments using Wayland. A build for the amd64 architecture (1.1 GB) is available for download.
The distribution environment is built on the basis of GTK3, a composite Server Labwc (Lab Wayland Compositor) offers features reminiscent of the Openbox window manager, the Sfwbar panel, and the spacefm file manager. The distribution includes a minimal number of packagesβrecommended applications are offered for installation during setup using the Calamares installer.

Assembly features:
- Suitable for hardware with limited resources (consumes 213 MB of RAM after startup)
- Used patched Labwc with window switcher that supports preview.
- Additional sfwbar widgets: network monitoring, temperature, keyboard layout.
- Thanks to the built-in Sfwbar widgets for configuring Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and sound, it was possible to get rid of heavy components such as NetworkManager, Blueman and Pavucontrol. The configuration is performed via the corresponding indicators in Sfwbar.
- The spacefm file manager has been updated with plugins that implement a recycle bin and an interface for mounting without using gvfs.
- Missing GUI elements are written in bash + Yad or Gtkdialog. Most elements are localized using gettext.
