Simply Linux 9.1 distribution release

Basalt Open Source Company announced the release of the Simply Linux 9.1 distribution kit, built on the basis of the ninth ALT platform. The product is distributed under a license agreement that does not transfer the right to distribute the distribution kit, but allows individuals and legal entities to use the system without restrictions. The distribution comes in builds for x86_64, i586, aarch64, armh (armv7a), mipsel, riscv64, e2kv4/e2k (beta) architectures and can run on systems with 512 MB of RAM.

Simply Linux is an easy-to-use classic desktop system based on Xfce 4.14, providing full localization of the interface and most applications. The distribution is designed for home systems and corporate workstations. The composition includes a set of more than thirty applications, specially selected taking into account the preferences of Russian users, as well as an extended set of drivers and codecs.

Of the components of the distribution are noted:

  • Linux kernel 5.10 (5.4 for e2k*, 4.9 for Nvidia Jetson Nano, 4.4 for MCom-02/Salyut-EL24PM2)
  • RPM 4.13 package manager
  • systemd system manager 246.13
  • Chromium 89 browser on x86 (Firefox ESR 52.9.0 for e2k* and 78.10.0 for other architectures)
  • Thunderbird mail client 78.8.0 (52.9.1 on e2k*)
  • office suite LibreOffice 7.0.5.2 "still" (6.3.0.3 on e2k*)
  • graphics editor GIMP 2.10.18
  • Audacious music player 3.10.1
  • instant messaging client Pidgin 2.13.0
  • VLC media player 3.0.11.1 (celluloid 0.18 for aarch64 and mipsel)
  • wine 5.20 (x86 only)
  • graphics subsystem as part of xorg-server 1.20.8 and Mesa 20.3.5
  • network management based on NetworkManager 1.18.10

The new release adds support for the Vulkan graphics API for x86 systems among various improvements and fixes; stabilized UEFI support on ARM platforms; added obs-studio package to the list of packages to select during installation.

Images for x86 are hybrid and support UEFI (SecureBoot can be left on); pay attention to the recommendations for writing to bootable media. The full image also contains a lightweight non-installable LiveCD, and a separate LiveCD is provided with the ability to install.
