The release of the NsCDE 2.2 (Not so Common Desktop Environment) project has been published, developing a desktop environment with a retro interface in the CDE (Common Desktop Environment) style, adapted for use on modern Unix-like systems and Linux. The environment is based on the FVWM window manager with a theme, applications, patches and add-ons to recreate the original CDE desktop. The project code is distributed under the GPLv3 license. Add-ons are written in Python and Shell. Installation packages are generated for Fedora, openSUSE, Debian and Ubuntu.
The goal of the project is to provide a comfortable and convenient environment for lovers of retro style that supports modern technologies and does not cause discomfort due to the lack of functionality. To give user applications a CDE style, skin generators for Xt, Xaw, Motif, GTK2, GTK3 and Qt5 have been prepared, allowing you to style the design of most programs using X11 for a retro interface. NsCDE allows you to associate CDE styling with modern technologies such as font rasterization using XFT, Unicode, dynamic and functional menus, virtual desktops, applets, desktop wallpapers, skins/icons, and so on.
In the new version:
- Implemented the ability to place the panel at the top of the screen (enabled by adding the "InfoStoreAdd frontpanel.on.top 1" setting to the ~/.NsCDE/NsCDE.conf file).
- A color scheme has been added for the kcalc calculator that matches the design of dtcalc.
- Icon design has been updated.
- Added support for Firefox 100+ styling. Updated CSS files to customize Firefox's appearance.
- Merged CSS files for GTK2 and GTK3 engines.
- The use of keyboard shortcuts that comply with the CUA (Common User Access) specification is implemented and enabled by default. To return the old keyboard combinations in the ~/.NsCDE/NsCDE.conf file, set the "InfoStoreAdd kbd_bind_set nscde1x" parameter or change the settings in the Keyboard Style Manager interface.
- Improved definition of PolkitAgent.
- The Kvantum theme engine, which can be selected in the Color Style Manager settings, implements more Motif-like styling for Qt5 lists.
