Release of ROSA Fresh 12 on the new platform rosa2021.1

NTC IT ROSA has released the ROSA Fresh 12 distribution based on the new rosa2021.1 platform. ROSA Fresh 12 is positioned as the first release demonstrating the capabilities of the new platform. This release is primarily intended for enthusiasts. Linux and contains the latest software versions. Currently, only the KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment image is officially available. Releases of images for other desktop environments and a server version are in development and will be available soon.

Release of ROSA Fresh 12 on the new platform rosa2021.1

Of the features of the new platform rosa2021.1, which replaced rosa2016.1, it is noted:

  • The transition from package managers RPM 5 and urpmi to RPM 4 and dnf has been made, which made the work of the package system much more stable and predictable.
  • The package database has been updated. This includes Glibc 2.33 (in backward compatibility mode with kernels) Linux up to 4.14.x), GCC 11.2, systemd 249+.
  • Added full support for the aarch64 (ARMv8) platform, including Russian Baikal-M processors. Support for the e2k (Elbrus) architecture is under development.
  • 32-bit x86 architecture renamed from i586 to i686. The 32-bit x86 (i686) architecture repository continues to exist, but this architecture is no longer tested by QA.
  • The minimum base system has been improved, its size has been significantly reduced, and regular builds of minimum rootfs for all three supported architectures have been provided, which can be used to create containers based on the rosa2021.1 platform or to install the system (to get a running OS, just install a few meta-packages: dnf install basesystem-mandatory task-kernel grub2(-efi) task-x11 and install the OS bootloader (grub2-install)).
  • The availability of some additional kernel modules in binary form (drivers for Wi-Fi / Bluetooth adapters Realtek RTL8821CU, RTL8821CE, Broadcom (broadcom-wl)) and their delivery "out of the box" is ensured, which allows you not to compile them on your computer; it is planned to expand the list of binary modules, including delivery of kernel modules of NVIDIA proprietary drivers in a ready-to-use form without compilation in the near future.
  • The Anaconda project is used as the installer (installer), which, in collaboration with Upstream, has been finalized to improve usability.
  • Implemented automated methods for deploying the operating system: PXE and automatic installation using Kickstart scripts (instruction).
  • Improved compatibility with RPM packages for RHEL distributions, CentOS, Fedora, SUSE: Added bindings to some packages with different names and ensured compatibility of the package manager with the repository metadata format (for example, if you install an RPM package with the proprietary Google Chrome browser, its own repository will be used).
  • The server part of the distribution has been significantly improved: builds of minimal server images have been adjusted, many server packages have been worked out; their development and writing documentation continues.
  • A single build mechanism for all official ISO images has been created, which can also be used to create your own builds.
  • Active use of the /usr/libexec directory has begun.
  • The work of IMA is provided, including the use of GOST algorithms; there are plans to embed IMA signatures in official packages.
  • The RPM database has been migrated from BerkleyDB to SQlite.
  • For DNS resolution, systemd-resolved is enabled by default.

Features of ROSA Fresh 12 release:

  • Updated GDM-based login interface.
  • The interface design has been redesigned (based on the breeze style, with the original set of icons), which has been brought to a look that meets modern trends, but at the same time retained recognition, colors and ease of use.
Release of ROSA Fresh 12 on the new platform rosa2021.1
  • Support is provided for easy and quick organization of a closed software environment out of the box, which allows you to prohibit the execution of untrusted code (at the same time, the administrator himself determines what he considers trusted, trust is not imposed on third-party software), which is important for building highly secure desktop, server and cloud environments ( IMA).
