Two years after the previous release, a server release has been published. Linux- Zentyal 8.1 distribution, built on a package base Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and specializes in creating servers for servicing local area networks of small and medium-sized businesses. Among other things, the distribution is positioned as an alternative Windows Server and includes components for replacing Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange Server. The ISO image size is 4.5 GB. A commercial edition of the distribution is available separately, but packages with Zentyal components are available to users. Ubuntu via the standard Universe repository.
The distribution is managed through a web interface, which forms about 40 modules for managing the network, network services, office server and enterprise infrastructure components. Supports rapid setup of network gateway, firewall, and mail Server, VoIP (Asterisk), VPN server, proxy (Squid), file server, employee collaboration system, monitoring system, backup server, network security system (Unified Threat Manager), user login system via Captive Portal, etc. After installation, each supported module is immediately ready to perform its functions. Configuration of all modules is performed through a system of interactive wizards and does not require manual editing of configuration files.
Among the changes in the new release:
- Updated insulation profiles based on Apparmor.
- The antivirus module has an updated version of the Clamav antivirus package and improved Clamd process isolation rules.
- The intrusion prevention module (ips) has a new command, suricata-update, for initial configuration and updating of the Suricata package.
- The web interface now displays progress indicators for operations.
- The mail server management module now features email address editing. The account setup interface has been improved. An option to disable SSL certificate verification in the fetchmail service has been added.
- The network configuration module's interface for deleting VLANs has been redesigned. Netplan configuration has been updated.
- The ntp module has been switched from using NTP to NTPsec.
- NSS and PAM management has been updated in the samba module. Domain level changes can now be made via the web interface. The user import and export interface has been redesigned.
- The web server management module now allows for separate disabling of ports for HTTP and HTTPS. Protection against incorrect virtual host configurations has been strengthened.
- The script for installation has been reworked Debian.
- Zenbuntu-desktop has a reworked X11 configuration, removed deprecated dependencies of v86d, gtk2-engines, video-intel and video-qxl, and redesigned the login welcome screen.
