Audacity 3.4 Sound Editor Released

A release of the free sound editor Audacity 3.4 has been published, providing tools for editing sound files (Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, MP3 and WAV), recording and digitizing sound, changing sound file parameters, overlaying tracks and applying effects (for example, noise reduction, changing tempo and tone ). Audacity 3.4 was the fourth major release created after the project was taken over by Muse Group. The Audacity code is licensed under GPLv3, with binary builds available for Linux, Windows and macOS.

Main improvements:

  • Features that are in demand when creating music have been added, such as the Beats & Measures mode, which makes it easier to match sound clips to the tempo and rhythm of a piece of music. The mode visualizes each beat using a grid and allows you to snap clips to the nearest beat.
  • Added a Time stretching feature that allows you to change the duration of an audio clip without changing the tone. Stretching uses an algorithm specially developed for music and allows you to achieve results that are ahead of many commercial solutions.
  • Added an export window (Exporter), which combines in one place access to all settings and export capabilities (including sampling settings and channel mapping for surround sound in 5.1 and 7.1 formats). A built-in file manager and an interface for accessing directories through a bookmark system are provided.
  • Added support for the Opus audio codec.
